Inner vacuum gap formation and drifting subpulses in pulsars

چکیده

The problem of formation of the inner vacuum gap in neutron stars with Ω · B < 0 is considered. It is argued by means of the condition Ti/Ts > 1, where Ti is the melting temperature of surface 56 26Fe ions and Ts is the actual temperature of the polar cap surface, that the inner vacuum gap can form, provided that the actual surface magnetic field is extremaly strong (Bs> ∼ 10 13 G) and curved (R < 10 cm), irrespective of the value of dipolar component measured from the pulsar spin down rate. The calculations are carried out for pulsars with drifting subpulses and/or periodic intensity modulations, in which the existence of the quasi steady vacuum gap discharging via E×B drifting sparks is almost unavoidable.

Psr 0943 + 10 : a Bare Strange Star ?

Recent work by Rankin & Deshpande strongly suggests that there exist strong " micro-storms " rotating around the magnetic axis of the 1.1s pulsar PSR 0943+10. Such a feature hints that most probably the large-voltage vacuum gap proposed by Ruderman & Sutherland (RS) does exist in the pulsar polar cap. However, there are severe arguments against the formation of the RS-type gap in pulsars, since...

Drifting subpulses and inner acceleration regions in radio pulsars

The classical vacuum gap model of Ruderman & Sutherland, in which spark-associated subbeams of subpulse emission circulate around the magnetic axis due to the E × B drift of spark plasma filaments, provides a natural and plausible physical mechanism of the subpulse drift phenomenon. Moreover, this is the only model with quantitative predictions that can be compared with observations. Recent pro...

On the Relationship between Radio and X-ray Signatures of Drifting Subpulses

Partially shielded vacuum gap model of the inner acceleration region in pulsars is examined with respect to the drifting subpulse phenomenon and the polar cap heating by E×B drifting sparks. The formula for the efficiency of X-ray luminosity from heated polar cap Lx/Ė ≈ (P̂3/P ) −2 was derived, which depends only on the observational tertiary subpulse drift periodicity P̂3. In PSR B0943+10 for wh...

Interrelation between radio and X-ray signatures of drifting subpulses in pulsars

A partially screened vacuum gap model of the inner acceleration region in pulsars is examined with respect to the drifting subpulse phenomenon and the polar cap heating by the streams of back-flowing particles generated in sparks associated with drifting subpules. We investigated correlation between the intrinsic drift rate and polar cap heating rate and found that they are coupled to each othe...

Xmm-newton Observations of Radio Pulsars B0834+06 and B0826 34 and Implications for the Pulsar Inner Accelerator

We report the X-ray observations of two radio pulsars with drifting subpulses, B0834+06 and B0826 34, using XMM-Newton. PSR B0834+06 was detected with a total of 70 counts from the three EPIC instruments over 50 ks exposure time. Its spectrum is best described as that of a blackbody (BB), with temperature Ts 1⁄4 (2:0þ2:0 0:9) ; 10 K and bolometric luminosity Lb 1⁄4 (8:6þ14:2 4:4 ) ; 10 erg s . ...
